XSniffer by Crossbow Technology, Inc. is a packet capture and analysis tool designed for Crossbow wireless sensor networks. It listens to over‑the‑air traffic using a compatible Crossbow mote configured as a sniffer, then decodes frames in real time to help developers and researchers diagnose network behavior, validate protocols, and measure link quality.

Key capabilities:

  • Real-time capture of IEEE 802.15.4 traffic with selectable radio channels (hardware dependent)
  • Decoding of TinyOS/Active Message headers and payloads, including addresses, message types, and sequence numbers
  • Timestamps, RSSI/LQI reporting, and basic packet statistics
  • Flexible filtering by channel, address, and message type
  • Logging to common file formats for offline analysis
  • Lightweight interface for live monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Complements Crossbow development and monitoring tools in typical TinyOS-based workflows

Typical uses:

  • Debugging application-level messaging and timing issues
  • Assessing link quality, packet loss, and network performance
  • Investigating interference and channel utilization in testbeds and deployments

Who it’s for:

  • Embedded developers, researchers, and educators working with Crossbow motes and TinyOS-based wireless sensor networks

Note: Specific features and hardware compatibility depend on the mote and radio platform used as the sniffer.
